Fine Art Registry® (FAR) Posts Deliberately Misleading Information
Makes No Attempt to Inform Readers of Outcome in Favor of Park West Gallery
On January 29, 2009, Fine Art Registry (FAR) posted a 33-year-old Detroit News article that mentioned a long-resolved lawsuit brought against Park West Gallery. In keeping with much of FAR’s “reporting,” Fine Art Registry made no attempt to inform readers of the outcome, which was in favor of Park West Gallery.
THE FACTS:
In 1976 a lawsuit was filed over the value of an original etching by Renoir, which was purchased from Park West for $125 (framed). The piece is listed in all the definitive Renoir catalogs and was accurately represented by Park West. This case was dismissed on Park West’s motion for summary judgment. In granting the motion, the Court held that 1) the plaintiff purchased two etchings which were worth what he paid for them and 2) there was no question that what the plaintiff had purchased was exactly what was represented by Park West Gallery.
